Europe's 500 was launched in 1996, initially under the patronage of the European Commission.
It has been published on an annual basis since the first edition in 1997.

* For the first time, the listing received company nominations from 27 out of 28 eligible countries (except Malta). 6 new EU Member State countries were identified : Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Slovenia
